Ich meine damit solche Sachen, die man bei uns so unter des Hand verkauft.
My translation: Dear old Lisa, I wish to write a card from abroad also to you and to greet you. To this moment I am fine, the children are excellent. Are you going to visit us? What is your success with buying things? Here everything is very expensive, nothing of clothes is so cheap here as by us. I mean those things that we buy on the sly.
10. Picture. A view of Gernrode in Harz (Germany).

Best health and kiss to the mother. Niks. Regards to everybody from me.

6. Sender. Saša from Riga.
9. Text. In Latvian: 25 VII 28
Mīļo Nicīt!
Šo sestdienu braukšu uz Ciekurzi. Atpakaļ uz Rīgu braukšu pirmdien. Pie Eldiņas braukšu pāris dienas vēlāk, jo abus braucienus savienot kopā nevaru: autobuss nav pieskaņots tādiem braucieniem un vairāk nekā par 3 dienām nedrīkstu būt prom no saviem augiem. Lietainais laiks stipri traucē manus darbus(?). Vispār šī vasara priekš mana darba stipri bēdīga. Mīļi noskūpstu. Saša. P.S. Nupat saņēmu Tavu vēstuli. Paldies.

My translation: Dear Nicits! This Saturday I am going to Ciekurzis. Back to Riga on Monday. I go to Elda some days later because both travels can not be joint: the bus schedule does not fit such travels and I can not leave my plants more than for 3 days. The rainy weather seriously disturbs my work. In general this summer is bad for my work. Kiss. Saša. P.S. Just received your letter. Thanks.
10. Picture. A drawing of two dogs - a melancholic and a phlegmatic.
11. Comments. Ciekurzis is a farm name (see the previous card). Saša is a shortened form for Aleksandrs. In the book /EVP/ much information concerning the author of this card was found.
Aleksandrs Zāmelis, botanist, b. 25. Aug. 1897 in Jaunvāles pag. Norveļi farm. Graduated from gymnasy in Vilnius and from Latvia University. Was a teacher in Valmiera realschool and in girls' school.
Father - Eduards, veterinary, b. 8 Nov. 1866 in Jaunvāles pag. Graduated from the Veterinary Institute in Tartu [Dorpat]. Worked as a veterinary in Vilnius prov., Alūksne and Valmiera.
Mother - Minna b. Norvelis. Wife - Elda b. Ūdre.
As you see everything fits quite well including the very rare name of the wife. Obviously his younger brother Nicīts (maybe a nickname for Nikolajs) was in military service first as an artillerist and than he began the service of a veterinary in Daugavpils. This was rather important position, because the horses at that time were a crucial transportation means in many military units.

9. Text. Dear uncle Voldis. Many happy returns of the Nameday
10. Picture. Two kids - a boy and a girl
11. Comments. The address of A.Bērzs completely coincides with the address of V.Bērzs from B-14 and B-16. Whether Voldemars Zariņš from Z-12 is the same person remains unproven.

My translation: I shall give you my address, send me a letter where are you now, when I'l come back you will get money.
10. Picture. Woolworth Building, New York.
11. Comments. As you see, the author is not very good in English yet, obviously he (or she) just arrived in the US. By the way, I feel some German accent in the Latvian language - kad es nahkschu atpakal. I do not realize where the author is coming back to. To his New York appartments or to Liepaja? It is unknown also what is Jinder street name now.

Z-17

Next Sunday Katlekaln should be visited.
10. Picture. A view of Riga. The Monument to the Tsar Peter the Great.
11. Comments. The monument pictured on the front side does not exist more. It was destroyed during WWI. Now at this place the well-known Freedom Monument is errected.
Katlekaln (now Katlakalns) is a district in Riga where presumably some relatives of the author lived.

Z-19

My translation: Dear parents. June 4 at 7 p.m. we embarked in Odessa and went to Crimea (Alupka). The aunt with cousins saw me off with the bouquets of roses, it was very nice. The sea was calm and beautiful, I felt myself lightly, so lightly: because I went to Crimea that I wanted to see since long time ago. Arrived in Alupka on June 6 without any problems. Soon I write you a letter. Emma.
10. Picture. A view of a park in Alupka.
11. Comments. The word cousins has gender dependent forms in Latvian. Here the form for several females was used.

Z-20

4. Dates. S - 25-Apr-1914
6. Sender. Minna Kaln* from Freudenberg (now Priekuļi)

10. Picture. A view - Agriculture school of Priekuļi. Near Vaive mill.
11. Comments. Minna was a student of the Agriculture school in Priekuļi. This school still exists and is high valuated in Latvia. For me was a surprise that somebody in Russia printed postcards with a view near this school.

1. Name. Mousieur H. de Sengbusch (Zengbušs) Russia, Livonie, Launkaln pr. Wolmar, Smilten.
4. Dates. S - 8-Jun-1914; R - 29-Jun-1914
6. Sender. Helene from Neuilly s. Seine, France
8. Language. German
9. Text. 1000 Dank. 1000 Kuesse. Helene. Eben Mutters Brief erhalten.
My translation: I am O.K. or always better. Every sound brings success in the language. Now the speaking is easier and also less mistakes by the writing. I will describe Versailles in the next letter. Now only that this was a kind of 1001 night. While we were returning home Fr. informed me about the death of Ernst. He was very kind he did it at the end of the day. I felt much more sorrow as I supposed. I have written some words to Ally. Maybe it was too fast. It is, however, easier to do while oneself still feels pain. Has aunt M. seen him? I have not written yet to aunt Zelma. Waiting news from you. This is a nice picture of Bois. 1000 thanks. 1000 kisses. Helene. Right now have received a letter from mother.
10. Picture. A view of Paris. Bois de Boulogne.

Z-21/2
1. Name. Herrn H. von Sengbusch (Zengbušs) Russia, Livonie, Launkaln pr. Smilten..
4. Dates. S - 16-Jun-1914; R - 7-Jun-1914
6. Sender. Helene from Neuilly s. Seine, France
8. Language. German
9. Text. Description of various churches in Paris the author visited.
10. Picture. A view of Paris. Hotel de Sens.
11. Comments. Actually Helene did not sign this letter, but the same hand and the addressee as in the previous letter allow to conclude that this is her another card. Unfortunately the cancellation stamps came on the text and some part of it I could not decipher.
This card was received in Launkalne before the previous one in spite of the fact that it was sent later. The previous card went from Paris to Wolmar 7 days, from Wolmar to Smilten - 1 month. I do not know what happened, usually the post in Russia worked normally. Both cards were sent 2 months before the WWI began.

Z-22

4. Dates. S - 31-Dec-1931
6. Sender. V.Petersons
9. Text. Happy New Year.
10. Picture. A picture called "Heartsmith".
11. Comments. Actually the name was written Simuls. There was also the second author of the card. His/her name is much more difficult to decipher.

Z-24
1. Name. Berta Zikmans, Naukšēnu Limbās. Latvia P.S.R.
4. Dates. S - 2-Mar-1948; R - 6-May-1948
6. Sender. Hildegarde from Santa Monica, USA
9. Text. In Latvian: Svejki!
Redzi mūsu ceļi apzimeti ka tev teicu. Ritu dosimees pa šo ceļu uz San Diego. Šādi visi U.S. ceļi galvenee, ļoti patikami. Alidei norakstiju garu wēstuli peektdeen. Vaj to divdesmitā saņēmat, kuru nosūtīju no kādas weetas še? Visu labu Hildegarde.

My translation: You see, our roads are marked as I told you. To morrow we are going this highway to San Diego. This is how the highways of the US look at, very nice. Friday I wrote a long letter to Alide. Have you received that letter I I sent from somewhere here? This month we are going home, we are marveling about home. It is told there is cold weather and much snow. I hope the roads will be open. We are going to Mexico, Texas, Arizona just to avoid those mountain roads. Feel myself happy, have seen a lot of beautiful and instructive things. I have sent 3 dresses to each of girls, they have received the first ones and like them much. Other ones Tosa will wear. All the best. Hildegard.
10. Picture. U.S. Highway 101 near Torrey Pines
11. Comments. I do not think that Hildegarde was a displaced person who emigrated to the USA after the WW2. In 1948 the emigration just started and the emigrees had no possibility to make journeys in Texas, etc. The mixture of the old and the new orthographies she used supports this conclusion.

Z-25
1. Name. Madam B.Zivert, Alexander str. 135, Riga
4. Dates. S - 18-Mar-1912, R - 8-Mar-1912 - this date corresponds to 21 Mar. of Gregorian calender
6. Sender. Theodors from Valanvron in Switzerland
9. Text. Teodors is happy that everything with the addressee is O.K. He does not understand what Elwine studies in those courses. He himself studies very much and it is rather difficult because the language is extremely complicated however it was a good idea to come to this boarding-school (pansions) because he will get the basics. He has also written to Genf for a position beginning from the end of April. He is going to stay here till April 15.
10. Picture. An alpine landscape near Zinal (Val d'Anniviers) with cows

Z-26
1. Name. Mr. Nikol. Zument, Riga, Stabu str. 51
4. Dates. S - 6-Dec-1929
6. Sender. Vera Zumment from Riga
8. Language. Russian
9. Text. Best wishes in the occasion of the Angels day from the aunt.
10. Picture. A view of Rezhica (Rēzekne) Nr. 1. Station street
11. Comments. The Angel day for Russians corresponds to the Nameday for Latvians. One Nikolajs Zumments b. 13 Apr. 1903 in Limbaži, emigrated to Germany in 1939. However at that time he lived in Kaļķu str. 8/10 so I can not assert that he and the addressee of this letter is the same person.

Z-27
1. Name. Mr. and Mrs. H.Zviedris, Dzirnavu str. 123, Riga
4. Dates. Unknown
6. Sender. Karlis* from Cairo in Egypt
9. Text. A Marry Christmas and a happy New Y ear
10. Picture. Street scene of Cairo. A drawing in colors.
11. Comments. The postage stamp is torn off and one can only say that it was really cancelled in Cairo.

Z-28
1. Name. Mr. P.Zvirgzds, Riga, Bruņinieku str. 28.

Ž-1
1. Name. Madame M.Ženič and the family, Dzirnavu str. 123. Riga
4. Dates. S - 11-Jan-1926
6. Sender. Š. and K.Kundziņi from Smiltene.
9. Text. The authors wishes the help of the God in the New Year. They are also happy that the addressee now is together with her children.
10. Picture. A landscape.
11. Comments. I remembered quite well that in Smiltene worked Pastor Kārlis Kundziņš (1850-1937). The book "Es viņu pazīstu" informed that his wife was Šarlote b. Egerte that corresponds to the initial used in the signature. Then I understood also what means the abbreviation Sm.m.m. I saw at the beginning of the text. It stands for Smiltenes mācītāja muiža - Pastor's manor in Smiltene. Yes, this is a letter of K.Kundziņš and his wife! His family was rather big and some information is available about it. I should prepare special page for this family.

Ž-2
1. Name. M. Žukovskis (actually written - Schukowsky). St. Rodenpois (Ropaži). Shop of Mr. Bisden for passing to Kaušu inn (krogs).
4. Dates. 12 May
6. Sender. K.Seetiņ from Klikaļi
9. Text. Mummy returned and is in good health. I picked her up in Auce. Maybe you also should come home to the Whitsun because there is information that the land-surveyors will be in our place. Now they are near Žagare where they have a small job about 10 farms. When they finish there, they come to Klikaļi.
10. Picture. No picture at all.
11. Comments. It is a pity that the postcard was not sent by post and it is not possible to guess the year of sending because the landsurveying activities are rather interesting for the history of farms in Latvia.
Klikaļi was not found in the lists of place names so it may be a farmname. A postage stamp and a frame for the address are printed on one side of the postcard, the other side is left blank for the letter, therefore it contains no picture. This was the type of postcards used mainly before 1904.

Ž-3
1. Name. Marija Žukovska, Moscow, Sretenskije vorota, Maļušin house.
