zieds1mazs.gif (257 bytes) Baltiņš

2 Names: Baltiņš, Širaks

7 cards

Here the postcards are described that, I think, should belong to a family of Baltiņš. All of them were sent to Marta Baltiņš beginning from the time when she was a little girl and learned writing, till the time she evidently began to work in the railway system

The information about the description of postcards can be found in another Page.

Baltiņš-1
1. Name. Miss Marta Baltiņ, St. Alt Švanenburg, Vec. Gulbenes Kīšos pie Širak kungiem
4. Dates. S - 18-Jan-1908
6. Sender. Berta from Riga
9. Text. In Latvian: Mihļa mahsiņ Martiņ kahpez Tu man neraksti. Jo ari es gribehtu redset kā Tu mahki rakstit, jo Lolle mums ar rakstija wehstuli ļoti smuki preeksch tahdas masas. Berta
My translation: Dear sister Marta. Why you do not write to me. I also wanted to see what are your writing skills because Lolle wrote a letter to us that was very nicely written for such a small girl. Berta.
10. Picture A drawing of a view in mountains.
11. Comments. Lolle is a nickname I have never heard before. From the card we can estimate the age of Marta. She could be 8-9 years old. In general the teaching of writing then began later than now.

Baltiņš-2
1. Name. Marta Baltiņ, St. Alt Švanenburg, Vec Gulbenes Kīšos
4. Dates. S - 18-Nov-1909
6. Sender. Berta from Riga
9. Text. The author asks if Marta also learns handiwork and proposes her to write what Janis does.
10. Picture A drawing of two roe-deers.
11. Comments. I decided that this card was written by Berta like the previous one because of similarity in the hand, the addressing - dear sister, and the problems these two cards touch are similar - both of them encourage Marta to write something for practice.

Baltiņš-3
1. Name. Miss Marta Baltiņ, St. Alt Švanenburg, Vec Gulbenes Drepes
4. Dates. S - 3-Jun-1911
6. Sender. The brother from Muehlgraben (now Mīlgrāvis, a part of Riga)
9. Text. The brother tells that he lives as usually but have no news from Marta and family.
10. Picture A drawing of a riverside.
11. Comments. The brother has written his name also, but I could not decipher it, maybe Sascha (see next card)

Baltiņš-4
1. Name. Miss M. Baltiņ, St. A. Švanenburg, Vec. Gulbenes mācītāja muischā (Pastor's manor in Vecgulbene)
4. Dates. S - 20-Mar-1915
6. Sender. Sascha from Riga
9. Text. Easter greetings.
10. Picture Easter card with a pair of lovers and a verse about spring.
11. Comments. Sascha is a nickname for Aleksandrs. If Saša should be the brother from the previous card, then I must say his hand has changed seriously during 4 years between both cards.

It will be possible to work at home on Sundays and in evenings. The room costs 9 and half roubles per month, nowadays flats are expensive. I am going to share the room with another lady, there is enough place. I am waiting for you. Next Saturday we move to the new flat. Petrograd. Zabaikalskij prospekt 130.
