This is an old tradition, and it became more popular among the relatively well situated people in the 1920-30s - to invite guests to marriage events by sending them special cards with short information about the event. In some cases similar cards were sent to inform about a betrothal.

The invitations sent by Latvians mainly differ from those sent by Germans. The Latvian ones are written in name of the couple to be married. The German invitations were mainly sent by the parents and namely by the bride's parents. So both kinds of the invitation bring different information.
