Māriņa Vārna versus Kārlis Liepiņš

The document published here is a standard decision of pagasts court about the subsistence of an illegitimate child. In Vidzeme [Livland] the subsistence of an illegitimate child was usually 10 Rub. per year until the age of 10 years. The three crosses after the names of the parts at the end of the document mean that both parts were illiterate and did not know writing.

The document used the form Liepiņa for the male name, which is grammatically even more correct than the now standard form Liepiņš.

Upon request No. 188 of 14 September by the honorable Pastor of Trikates parish both a soldier Kārlis Liepiņa and Mariņa Vārna with her father Dāvis were summoned by the court in order to investigate the complaint of Māriņa Vārna versus Kārlis Liepiņa for sleeping with and for promising to marry her.

Kārlis Liepiņa appeared before the court and reported: I really have slept with the maid Mariņa Vārna on her encouragement, because she said: "I am also wishing to have a son who could be my breadwinner in my old age", but I did not promise to marry her. - Which Mariņa Vārna denied. Kārlis Liepiņa promised that when Mariņa Vārna would born the child he would supply it with means of subsistence till the age of 10 years each year 10 (ten) roubles in silver. Hereto both Mariņa Vārna and her father Dāvis agreed and certified their statements by their signatures.
