zieds1mazs.gif (257 bytes) Expenses of Karin von Hirschheydt

2 Names: Engel, Hirschheydt

Here an accounting report is published. It was made in the well known lunatic asylum situated in Strenèi [Stackeln] town for one of the patients - Miss Karin von Hirschheydt, and it describes her expenses from June 20, 1913 to March 10, 1914. In the report the expenses for personal needs are put on, the expenses for the medical treatment were paid in other way, I think.

The report is useful for the understanding of the prices of variable items and the system of hospitals, but, of course, it also informs what happened to Karin von Hirschheydt if somebody comes on the name. It is possible to add that Karin Judith Gabriela Hirschheydt was born on August 12, 1887 in Umurga [Ubbenorm], and she emigrated to Germany from the same asylum 25 years later in December 1939 /Izceïotâji/.

The text is written in German. Here I typed the names of items in German, their English translations and the appropriate sums in Roubles. I translated Baumwolle as cotton, it is the modern usage of the word. I think, however, that here cotton wool is meant. I translated Lippenpomade as lipstick, though I think at that time no lipsticks were manufactured yet. Unfortunately I could not translate the word that I read as Immalin or Immolin. I have only an idea that this could be a brand name of boot cream because it was bought together with boot-laces. By the way, Karin needed too many of boots-laces, I think.

The total sum the accountant counted up is wrong - there should be 38.35 Rbl.

At the bottom of the document an inscription is made:

StackelnEngel.GIF (40112 bytes)

that may be read as : 9/IV 1914 p. Post abgeschickt 40 Rbl. Actually in the word abgeschickt the letter g is missing that should have been there, I think. With this letter the phrase means that 40 Rbl were sent by post on April 9, 1914. Evidently the inscription was made by somebody who was responsible for the finances in the family von Hirschheydt.
