In this Page the books that contain the lists of people are described. I have these books on my bookshelf in the office and once hope to index some of them. Here I present the list of these books mainly for you to learn what kinds of information could be available in the real world, and what kinds of queries I could answer just by stretching my hand and getting a book from the shelf.

/Address N/ An address book of the Nazi organisations for the Latvia's part of Ostland. 1943. 343.pp. (In Latvian). It contains the names of the officials.
/Address V/ Valsts adresu kalendars. (The calendar with the addresses of the State civil servants). 1923, 1926, 1936, 1938, 1940 (In Latvian)
/Album A/ Album Academicum Rižskovo Politehničeskovo Instituta. 1862-1912. Jonk i Polijevskij, Riga 1912. 815.pp. (In Russian) The book presents the names, birth data and short biographies of 9931 student and graduate of Riga Politechnicum and Riga Politechnical Institute for the time period 1862-1912. In 1938 another book was published (in Latvian) with additional information about approximately 1300 of them and with information on 3818 students of the time period 1912-1919.
/Album D/ Album Academicum der Kaiserlichen Universität Dorpat. Dorpat 1889. 1001 pp. (In German). The book presents the names, birth data and short biographies of the students and graduates of University of Dorpat (now Tartu) for the time period 1802-1889. The total number of people is 14,331.
/Album DL/ Album Dorpato-Livonorum. 1875. 192.pp. (In German).This is a list of Tartu [Dorpat] University students who joined the student corporation Livonia. This was mainly the corporation of ethnic Germans from Vidzeme [Livland], only some Latvian names are mentioned in the list. The list contains information about the birth date, father's profession and estate, short description of the career after the graduation of the University.
/Album L/ Album Lettonorum 1882-1912. 131 pp. (In Latvian). The list and short biographies of the members of a student corporation Lettonija in Tartu [Dorpat] university. The list was compiled by F.Mülenbachs. It contains information about 385 former students of the university.
/Alks/ Dzintris Alks. Latvijas mediķi politisko represiju dzirnās 1940-1953. g. No information about printing time. 101 pp. (In Latvian). Names, birth year, time of repression, and profession of doctors, medical students and pharmaceutists repressed by both Bolsheviks and Nazi.
/Arolovičs/ Latvijskije jevreji-vojny, pogibšije v borjbe s nacizmom 1941-1945. Kniga pamjati. (The Jewish soldiers from Latvia, who perished in the warfare against Nazism. 1941-1945. The book of memory). Compiled by S.Arolovičs. Rīga 1997. 96 pp. (In Russian). The total number of people mentioned in the book is 2166.
/Breģe/ Ilona Breģe. Cittautu mūziķi Latvijā.(Musicians of other ethnicities in Latvia)1401-1939. Leksikons. Zinātne. 2001. 229.lpp. (In Latvian) The book presents the biographies of the musicians who worked in the region of Latvia or were born here, but were not Latvians by ethnicity (Jewish, Russians, etc., and mainly Germans). The information about music instrument builders is also included.
/Brunstermann/ Friedrich Brunstermann. Die Geschichte der Kleinen oder St. Johannis-Gilde in Wort und Bild (History of the Small, or St. John Guild in words and pictures). Riga, 1902. 752.pp. (In German). The book contains names of all known artisans, who were members of the Small Guild from the beginning up to 1901.
/BSS/ Baltijas skolotāju seminārs. 1870-1919. (Teacher seminary of Baltics). Rediģējis Ed. Tomass. Rīgā, 1940. 599.pp. (In Latvian) 1391 name and short biographies of the students of this seminary both those who had graduated from the seminary and those who had not. Many of the students were Latvians of Russian Orthodox religion, relatively many students (11%) were Estonians. Additionaly the biographies of the teachers are published in the book.
/EVP/ Es viņu pazīstu. Latviešu biogrāfiskā vārdnīca. (I know him/her. The biographical dictionary of Latvians) Sastādījis Ž.Unams. Grand Haven. Mich. 1975. 580 pp. (In Latvian).
The book contains short biographies of 6336 very important persons (artists, writers, pastors, politicians etc.) in prewar Latvia before 1939. The biographies provide a lot of genealogically important information. Apart from the basic data of the person it informs about the names of both parents and even on the spouse, though not always.
/Filistri/ Filistru biedrību savienības sastāvs 1937. gada 1. janvārī. Rīgā 1937. 235. pp. (In Latvian). The list of the members of student corporations who have graduated from their educational institutions and continued to be active in the student corporations. 1773 members of 18 student corporations. The list comprises the names, jobs and home addresses.
/Gruntsgabali/ Rīgas pilsētas gruntsgabalu un ielu saraksts. (The list of real estates and streets of Riga city) Rediģējis Dr. phil. Ernests Bulmerinks.Rīga 1934. 520.pp. (In Latvian) The book names the owners of all houses of Riga city. The information is grouped by the street names.
/Izceļotāji/ Izceļojušo vācu tautības pilsoņu saraksts. (The list of resettled citizens of German ethnicity). 1940. Iekšlietu ministrijas Administratīvā departamenta izdevums. 1776+17 pp. (In Latvian) Names, birth data and places of residence of 52,589 resettlers. The list is organised in the alphabetical order of the names and contains the birth date and place, the address in Latvia, the maiden name of an emigree.
/Jūrniecība/ Enciklopēdija. Latvijas jūrniecības vēsture. 1850-1950. (Encyclopedia.. History of navigation in Latvia) The chief editor Ilze Bernsone. Rīgas vēstures un kuģniecības muzejs. preses nams. Rīga. 1998, 323 pp. (In Latvian) The book contains short biographies of leading experts in shipping including ship captains..
/Kalendari/ At the end of the 19th century two important calendars were regularly published in the region of Latvia - Rigasche Almanach in Riga and Mitausche Kalendar in Jelgava [Mitau]. Both calendars presented lists of state officials of all levels in both provinces including the capitals of apriņķi. I have copied these lists for some years.

(In Latvian) The names, the birth dates, the dates of the perish and the military units of 16,000 soldiers are mentioned.
/Latweeschi/ Latweeschi un latweetes Kreewijas augstskolās.(Male and female Latvians in the higher education institutions of Russia) H.Alunāna drukātava, Jelgava, 1908. 136.pp. (In Latvian). There were published 2078 short biographies of Latvian students and graduates. I could found in the book only 4 names of female students of St. Petersbourg conservatory, however. (Actually I posess only a copy of the original borrowed from Voldemārs Bondars. Thank You, Voldemār)
/LDG/ Latvijas darbinieku galerija. 1918-1928. "Grāmatu draugs". Rīgā, 1929. 466.pp. (In Latvian) Biographies of the persons that were found important in Latvia at the time of the compilation of the book.
/LU20/ Latvijas Universitāte divdesmit gados. 1919-1939. II daļa. Mācības spēku biogrāfijas un bibliogrāfija. (University of Latvia in 20 years. Biographies and bibliographies of the faculty members) Latvijas Universitāte. 1939. pp.647. (In Latvian) The book presents 648 biographies with information about both parents of the faculty members.
/Māksla un arhitektūra/ Māksla un arhitektūra biografijās (Art and architecture in biographies). Rīga. Latvijas enciklopēdija. vol. 1. 1995, pp.239, vol.2. 1996, pp.239. (In Latvian) The books comprise biographies of all artists who worked in Latvia regardless of their ethnicity. The biographies present information on parents or/and other relatives, if they were active in any of arts.
/Mediķi/ Latvijas mediciniskā personāla saraksts. (The list of medical professionals in Latvia) Tautas labklājības ministrijas Veselības departamenta oficiāls izdevums. Rīgā, 1940. 236.pp. (In Latvian) The list provides names, birth date, graduating date and working place of doctors, dentists, pharmaceutists and veterinarians. The book also comprises the list of hospitals and drugstores.

(The list of the persons sentenced by the courts of Latvia prepared by the Ministry of Justice.) 1) Pirmā grāmata (vol. 1) No No 1-3000 Rīgā 1922. 2) Otrā grāmata (vol. 2) No No 3001-8000 Rīgā 1923. 3) Ceturtā grāmata.(vol. 4) No No 1-5100. Rīgā. 1925.g. 4 ) Vienpadsmitā grāmata (vol.11) No No 1-9700 Rīgā. 1931. 5) Septiņpadsmitā grāmata (vol.17 in two parts) Rīgā 1937. Tieslietu ministrijas izdevums. (In Latvian) All 5 books totally inform about 30,000 persons. The book lists all people, who were sentenced by the courts of Latvia regardless of their deeds and punishments. The lists contain information about the first and family name, the patronimic (only till 1930), the age (the birth date in 1930 and in 1936), the birth place, the felony and the punishment, the information on the court decision(s) or sentence(s). As far as I understand, the books were published for use in Police institutions not for selling in shops.

/Piemiņas grāmata/ 1905. gada revolūcijas cīnitāju piemiņas grāmata. (The memorial book of revolutionary fighters of the Revolution 1905). vol 1-3. 334.pp.+343.pp.+384.pp. (In Latvian). I borrowed the books from my sister Rita Svece. Thank you, Rita!
/Pleskava/ Bijušās Pleskavas mērnieku skolas absolventi latvieši skolā un darbā. 1874-1934. Atceres albums (The Latvians - graduates from the former school of land surveyors in Pleskava [Pliskau, Pskov] in the school and at work 1874-1934. Memorial album) pp. 343 pp (In Latvian) The book contains information about the school and short biographies of its 176 Latvian students from the Baltic provinces and Latgale.
/Prāvas/ No NKVD līdz KGB, Politiskās prāvas Latvijā 1940-1986. (From NKVD to KGB. Political trials in Latvia 1940-1986). Red. R.Vīksne un K.Kangeris. Latvijas Vēstures institūta apgāds. Rīga 1999. 975 pp. (In Latvian). Names, birth year and place, date and grounds for arrest of 49,321 person.
/Represētie/ Represēto personu saraksts. 1941 2 Vol. (The list of repressed people) Ed. Jānis Riekstiņš. Latvijas Valsts Arhīvs. 1995 pp.128 + pp.160. (In Latvian). The list contains only names and birth date, however other repressed family members can be easily said from the list.

/Rullis 2/ Wehletaju rullis preeksch pilsehtas domneeku wehleschanas 1890 (The roll of voters of municipality members) Riga 1890 (In Russian, German and Latvian) The list contains names and businesses of the people (about 6000 persons) entitled to participate in the voting of the municipality members of Riga city. I also have a similar list for 1909. (about 4000 persons)
/Skolas/ Lists of school graduates and students for the 2nd., the 3rd and the 4th Rīga secondary schools (gymnasia) for the 1920s-1930s. Almost all these lists are indexed now and the appropriate data base with additional information should be made available on this site.
/Skolotāji/ Latvijas obligatorisko skolu skolotāju saraksts. Latviešu skolas 1923/24 mācību gadā. (The list of teachers of mandatory schools in Latvia. Latvian schools 1923/24 school year). Rīgā 1924. 150 pp. (In Latvian) List of 5143 school teachers (names, birth year, education, school). The list does not comprise teachers of minority schools.
/SJGK1863/ Statistisches Jahrbuch für das Gouvernement Kurland für 1863. Mitau, 1863. 199 pp. (In German) This is a book of statistical data, but it contains also names of the official persons of Kurzeme [Kurland] province.
/Talavija/ Talavija 1900-1925. Rīga 1928.(In Latvian) In this book 549 short biographies of the members of the student corporation "Talavija" are published. Unfortunately, the book is bad condition - some portraits of the members are cut off, but the biographical information is not lost.
/TD/ Telephone directories. I have the following telephone directories (TD). TDs of Latvia for 1935, 1939, 1940. Each one of them comprises about 70,000 names of telephone users. TD of Riga and Vidzeme [Livland] for 1914 presents information about 10,000 users.
/Tirgotāji/ Latvijas tirgotāju saraksts. (List of Latvia merchants). Finanču ministrijas izdevums. Rīgā, 1936. 361.pp. (In Latvian) The list of 5877 commercial enterprises with the.persons and the legal entities that were registered as their owners. The names, birth dates and birth places of the persons are provided.
/Treijs/ Rihards Treijs. Latvijas valsts un tās vīri. Latvijas Republikas Valdības ministri savos darbos. 1918-1940 (Latvia state and its statesmen. The deeds of the Ministers of Latvia government 1918-1940). "Latvijas Vēstnesis". Rīga, 1998. 540 pp. (In Latvian) Biographies of the ministers. Lists of all of the parliament deputies.
/TuK/ Teātris un Kino. Biogrāfijas. (Theater and cinema. Biographies). vol. 1. A-J. The chief editor and compiler Māra Niedra. Preses nams. Rīga. 1999. 462.pp. (In Latvian). The books comprise biographies of all theater and cinema actors, directors etc. who worked in Latvia, regardless of their ethnicity including those who emigrated to the USSR after 1917 or to the Western countries after 1944. The biographies presents information about professions of the parents and informs about other relatives in case they were active in any of arts.
/ValmierasKS/ Valmieras kreisskolas piemiņas svētku albums. Rīga. 1930. (In Latvian). Short history of Valmiera apriņķis school with biographies of about 120 graduates mainly of Latvian ethnicity. Actually I have only copies of the relevant pages of the book.
/Vatere/ Eva Vatere. Jewish Doctors in Latvia (1918-1996). Rīgā 1997, 274.pp. (in Latvian and Russian). In the book about 5000 short biographies of Jewish medical specialists are compiled.
/Virsnieki/ Latvijas armijas augstākie virsnieki. 1918-1940. (The higher rank officers of Latvia Army). Rīga 1998. Compiled by Ē.Jēkabsons and V.Ščerbinskis. 527 pp. (In Latvian). Short biographies of 792 officers. The information about their spouses and children is also presented.
/VVSS/ Valmieras/Valkas skolotāju semināra audzekņi. (The students of teacher seminary in Valka / Valmiera). Rīga, 1936. 262 pp. (In Latvian). Short biographies of 720 students of this seminary, the information about teachers, and statistical data are published in this book.
/Zemledelije/ Zemļedeļije v Kurļandskoj guberņiji. (Agriculture in the Kurzeme [Kurland] province). Pod redakcijej sekretarja komiteta N.M.Stepanova. Mitava 1912. 397.pp. (In Russian). The book informs about the farms in Kurzeme. A lot of land pieces of retired soldiers or poor peasants are identified by the name of the owner, real farms had their own names.
/Žīgure/ Anna Žīgure. Latvijas policijas vēsture. (History of Latvia Police). 3.grāmata. Rīga, Fakts. 1998. (In Latvian) 313 pp. The book contains the list of policemen and police officers. The list is not complete, however.
