Letter of Kārlis Alksnis

1 Name: Alksnis

Stephen B. wrote in the discussion group ROOTS about his success in the investigation of Alksnis family history.

I feel very lucky to have found a postcard written by Karlis to his brother August in San Francisco. It was likely written between 1921 and 1924 in Rotterdam (Holland) due to the generic Rotterdam tourist image on the back. I was aware that Karlis was a crew member for transatlantic ships based out of Holland and Belgium. It does not appear that the postcard was mailed because of the lack of a postage stamp, but that does not necessarily diminish the information value.

He tried also to decipher the text of this postcard, but his deciphering was not awfully successful. It is not a surprise, because the text is really difficult to read. At the beginning of 1920s new Latvian orthography began to become common and Karlis sometimes had problems to choose between old and new orthography. It seems also that he had not great experience in any of them. But, of course, this message is really interesting and very important for the research.
