A group of fugitives from Suntaži

6 Names: Ekarts, Karomalins, Lāze (Lāže?), Mažāns, Richters, Švarcs

Here a document is published that informed about a group of fugitive serfs and asked everybody to help to chase them. The leaflet was printed by the Vidzeme [Livland] government in 1802 and was distributed to all parishes of the province with instructions to Pastors to read it in churches and after that to send it to all manors of the parishes as a circular letter. The fugitive serfs belonged to the Pastor of Suntaži [Sunzeln] parish. In that time serfs had no hereditary family names yet and presumably they were described in the document by the name of the farmstead they lived in. Actually here the inhabitants of two farmsteads are mentioned - Mažāni and Lāzes, if spelled according to the modern rules. Later in the 1820s, when family names were acquired, they frequently coincided with the names of appropriate farmsteads. I suppose that Mažāni farm could generate the name Mažāns or Mažans, but some inhabitants of Lāzes farm could get the name Lāze. Unfortunately, I have never heard of the name Lāze and could not find it in modern directories. May be it was changed to the name Lāže.

The Kgoder pub mentioned in the text evidently was printed with errors. The word is not possible either in Latvian or in German language.

I think that it is not obligatory to believe that these and other escaping serfs were so awfully bad like it is described in this text.

Demnach vom Sunzelschen Pastorathe die in der hiebeygehenden Specification benannten und kenntlich gemachten Erbleute, ohne die mindeste ihnen von Seiten des Pastorats gegebene Veranlassung, entwichen sind; als werden hiedurch von der Gouvernements-Regierung sämmtliche Magisträte, Gutsbesitzer, Arrendatoren und Disponenten aufgefordert, die bemeldeten Läuflinge aufsuchen und falls sie irgendwo betroffen werden sollten, sofort unter sicherer Bewachung an das nächste Ordnungsgericht, zur weitern Abgabe an ihre Erbstelle, transportiren zu lassen. Während eines Zeitraums von einem halben Jahre sind vom Sunzelschen Pastorate nachstehende Menschen entlaufen, als:

1) Im November 1801, der Junge Maschan Jecob, 18 Jahr alt, klein von Wuchs, hat ein rundes, etwas pockennarbiges, rothes Gesicht, und einen wackligten Gang.

2) Im May dieses Jahres der Knecht und Ehekerl Lahses Jahn, etwa 36 Jahr alt, mittlerer Statur, blassen Gesichts, und mit blondem Haar. Er hat ein Weib und vier Kinder hinterlassen. Als Ursache seiner Entweichung wird angegeben, daß er im Sunzelschen Kgoder-Kruge Wegeleute beträchtlich bestohlen habe.

3) In der Nacht vom 24sten zum 25sten Juny der Knecht und Ehekerl Lahses Martin, als überwiesener Aufwiegler, Rädelsführer und Wegweiser der nachfolgenden Leute. Dieser Lahse Martin ist 38 Jahr alt, mittlerer Statur, hat schwarze Haare, und ein braunes pockennarbiges Gesicht.

4) Dessen altes Weib Ilse, 60 Jahr alt, dessen Stieftochter,

5) die Magd Edde, 29 Jahr alt, braunem Haar und Augen, und etwas pockennarbigem Gesichte, und mit derselben ihren unehelichen Kindern, als Marrie, 4 Jahr alt, und Maje dreyviertel Jahr alt.

6) Des Lahses Martin Stiefsohn, der Junge Lahses Willum, ist 24 Jahr alt, hat dunkles Haar und ist schlank von Wuchs.

7) Ferner hat der Lahses Martin mit sich entführt, den Wirthen Maschan Jecab, 36 Jahr alt, untergesetzter Statur, hat braunes Haar und eine Wähne über dem linken Auge.

8) Dessen Weib, die Wirthin Maschan Anne, 32 Jahr alt, mit schwarzen Haar und Augen. Diese Leute haben mit sich geführt, von ihren vier Kindern die beyden Mädchen Maje 9 Jahr alt, und Mine, dreyviertel Jahr alt.

9) Der Knecht und Ehekerl Maschan Bertul, 45 Jahr alt, mittlerer Statur und mit braunem Haar.

10) Die Magd Maschan Trine, 37 Jahr alt, die ein schielendes Auge hat, lang von Wuchs und starkem Körperbau, und von der nicht ganz unwahrscheinlich vermuthet wird, daß sie vielleicht jetzt zum drittenmale durch Unzucht schwanger sey, und deshalb der Ueberredung des Lahses Martin gefolgt ist, da er schon 1800 ein Mädchen, Names Greeta, entführte, die auch jetzt noch in Kurland seyn soll.

Ausser diesen Leuten werden noch als abwesend vermißt:

11) Der Junge Maschan Pritz, 20 Jahr alt, klein von Wuchs, sehr pockennarbig und mit schielenden Augen: - ein berüchtigter Dieb.

12) Der Wirth Lahses Mikkel, ist dem Trunk ergeben.

According to the Pastorate of Suntaži, the serfs, who are named and described in the attached specification, are escaped without slightest permission from the side of the Pastorate of Suntaži, therefore the Province Government asks all municipalities, the owners, the tenants and the managers of manors to search for the mentioned serfs and, in case they were caught somewhere, to transport them to the nearest Order court for transfer to their owner. The following persons have escaped from Pastorate in Suntaži during half a year:

1) In November 1801, Mažānu Jēkabs, unmarried, is 18, small in stature, has round, a bit pockmarked, red face, and wobbly walk

2) In May this year, Lāzes Jānis, a married farmhand, about 36, has a medium build, pale face and blond hair. He has left his wife and four children. It is supposed that the reason for his escape was that he has considerably robbed travelers in Kgoder pub.

3) On the night from June 24 to 25, Lāzes Mārtiņš, a married farmhand, who is known as the agitator, ringleader and guide for the below mentioned people. This Lāzes Mārtiņš is 38 years old, has a medium build, black hair and a brown pockmarked face.

4) His old wife Ilze, 60 years old; his daughter-in-law,

5) Maid Ede, 29 years old, has brown hair and brown eyes, a bit pockmarked face, and her illegitimate children Marija, 4 years old, and Maija, three quarters year old, are taken with their mother.

6) A stepson of Lāzes Mārtiņš named Lāzes Viļums, unmarried, 24 years old, has dark hair and is slim in stature.

7) Additionally Lāzes Mārtiņš has kidnapped Mažānu Jēkabs, the farmhost, 36 years old, who has a stocky build, brown hair and a wound above the left eye.

8) His wife Mažānu Anna, the farmhostess, 32 years old, has black hair and eyes. The couple has abducted both girls of their four children - Maija, 9 years old, and Minna three quarters year old.

9) Mažānu Bērtulis, married farmhand, 45 years old, has a medium build and brown hair.

10) Mažānu Trīne, a maid, 37 years old, has squint in one eye, is tall in stature and has a strong build, and she is suspected that perhaps she has indecently become pregnant for the third time, which was the reason why she has already persuaded Lāzes Mārtiņš to kidnap a girl named Grieta in 1800. The girl now should be in Kurland yet.

Aside from the above mentioned, the following persons are still missing:

11) Mažānu Fricis, unmarried, 20 years old, small in stature, very pockmarked and has squint in both eyes: - a notorious thief.

12) Lāzes Miķelis, a farmhost, a drunkard.
